Department of ENT

Message from the HOD
Introduction
The Department of Otorhinolaryngology is considered one of the leading otorhinolaryngology institutes in the country. It is a well-established unit providing comprehensive clinical, academic and research facilities. It consists of dedicated outpatient clinics, fully equipped operation theatres, dedicated ENT wards, ICU/HDU and teaching areas equipped to meet undergraduate and postgraduate training requirements. It is the only otorhinolaryngology institute in Pakistan that offers separate rhinology, otology and head and neck sub-units and designated wards. Students are encouraged to participate actively in clinical case discussions and skill-based learning sessions under close guidance of ENT consultants.
In addition to training undergraduates, the department conducts postgraduate training programs in FCPS and fellowship in otology under the umbrella of NUMS, with structured academic activities, surgical training and research opportunities. Our commitment to excellence is reflected in our remarkable track record, boasting over 770 cochlear implants, 750 Endoscopic surgeries including skull base, orbit and other complex cases and multiple head and neck tumour surgeries, in the last 02 years alone. The ENT Dept has carries out multiple workshops and training sessions through the โFriends of Pakistan Programโ through which multiple national and international trainers participate in teaching the students.
Through its integration of patient care, teaching and research, the department continues to play a vital role in shaping competent and skilled otorhinolaryngologists.
Outline of the Course
The undergraduate course in Otorhinolaryngology is taught during the 4th year of the MBBS program and is spread over one year. It is designed to provide students with a strong foundation in the recognition, diagnosis and management of commonly encountered ear, nose, throat and head and neck conditions.
The course begins with an overview of the relevant anatomy and pathology, followed by a structured study of common diseases affecting the ear, nose, paranasal sinuses, oral cavity, pharynx, larynx and neck. It focuses not only on the academic aspects, but on important practical and clinical skills such as developing the ability to elicit a focused history, perform a thorough clinical examination, and interpret basic diagnostic findings. Students are also introduced to the principles of audiology, endoscopy and radiological assessment, which serve as essential tools in clinical practice.
Clinical training is a key component of the curriculum. Students participate in outpatient clinics, ward rounds and operation theatre demonstrations, where they observe patient evaluation and surgical procedures under direct supervision. There are regular workshops and training sessions for students, like the hands-on needle cricothyroidotomy workshop that is offered to every student. Teaching is reinforced through case-based discussions, problem-based learning and interactive seminars.
By the end of the course, students are expected to acquire essential clinical skills, from forming relevant diagnosis to the early management and treatment of ENT disorders, preparing medical students to function as competent practitioners and compassionate doctors.
