Department of Oral Biology and Tooth Morphology

Message from the HOD
Introduction
Oral Biology and Tooth Morphology is an essential component of the dental curriculum as it serves as a bridge between the basic and clinical dentistry, laying the groundwork for a comprehensive understanding of oral health and disease. Our department is committed to imparting high-quality education through a structured and integrated approach to teaching and learning. We strive to instill in our students a strong foundation in the biological sciences, critical thinking skills, and a deep appreciation for the scientific basis of dentistry. The department is well-equipped in terms of the infrastructure and the armamentarium required for teaching and learning. It also has a museum which has state of the art models and specimen. Furthermore, it possesses a histology laboratory in which the students learn in groups through digital microscope and individually in optical microscopes. The department, being committed for excellence, integrates actively with other basic and clinical departments as well.
Outline of the Course
Oral Biology and Tooth Morphology is taught to 1st year BDS undergraduate students. The curriculum has been designed in line with vision and the mission of the college in order to produce dentists who are able to provide professional, ethical and evidence-based healthcare to the community. The subject is integrated horizontally with Anatomy, Biochemistry and Physiology, and vertically with other basic and clinical subjects of dentistry. This hybrid model of integration serves as a beginning to a journey of improving the learning process and keeping it aligned with the contemporary models of teaching and learning worldwide. Oral Biology consists of all Oral and maxillofacial embryology, anatomy, histology and physiology with special emphasis on the dental structures and a few very important and pertinent para-oral structures. Tooth morphology, the second part of the subject, is focused on the topographic features of teeth and their functional importance which is an integral requirement for all practicing dentists. A very prominent feature of our curriculum is that it is dynamic, which keeps on improving on the basis of the feedbacks taken from all stakeholders.
